Classification
Supplemental: Epilepsy
Short Description of Instrument
Purpose: The Hague Side Effects Scale (HASES) assesses the possible medication side-effects for treatment of epilepsy, to be completed by a parent/guardian.

Comment: Items included in the HASES were based on parental suggestions during in-depth interviews about side effects, item – total correlations in a pilot version of the scale, and internal consistency of the scale. Based on clinical classification side effects, the measure is divided into two subscales: Toxic (14 items), and Chronic (6 items). Internal consistency analysis yielded the following alpha scores: Toxic 0.87, Chronic 0.81. The HASES can be used to assess adverse event burden in cross-sectional studies as well as ongoing prospective assessments. The instrument lacks assessment of weight changes, and may not be comprehensive. Idiosyncratic side effects were initially included but later removed due to poor reliability. The scale has been independently assessed for reliability and validity by Mapi Values, an independent organization specializing in such work.
