| Short Description of Instrument |
The Rome III/IV Criteria for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders was developed via Delphic process and is widely recognized within the Gastrointestinal research community.
The Rome III and IV Criteria Constipation Module provides a consensus definition for a functional constipation diagnosis. It is appropriate for use in both clinical and research settings.

The Rome III and IV Diagnostic Questionnaire for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders in Adults (R3DQ and R4DQ) is comprised of the Rome III/IV diagnostic criteria in question form that can be understood and reported by patients and research participants. The R3/4DQ intended uses are to provide inclusion criteria for clinical research studies, to serve as case definitions for epidemiological surveys, and to assist clinicians in arriving at a provisional diagnosis.

| Scoring and Psychometric Properties |
Scoring: Functional constipation is diagnosed when presence of two or more of the listed symptoms are experienced for the previous 3 months with their onset beginning at least six months prior.
Psychometric Properties: The Rome IV criteria have been reported to have a sensitivity of 33.9% and specificity of 94.5%% for functional constipation, excluding opioid-induced constipation and irritable bowel syndrome when tested in adult gastroenterology clinic patients. When including opioid-induced constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, the reported sensitivity was 70.5% and the specificity was 93.1% (Palsson et al., 2016).
Specificity and test-retest agreement of the Rome III Criteria Constipation Module were reported as 96.5% and 93.3%, respectively.
