| Short Description of Instrument |
Purpose: The North American Adult Reading Test (NAART) is a modification of the National Adult Reading Test (NART) (Blair & Spreen, 1989) that assesses premorbid intellectual functioning.
Use: Subjects/patients are required to read a list of 61 phonetically atypical words out loud.
Time Estimate: There is no given time limit to administer this test. The subject/ patient is encouraged to take their time and the examiner is encouraged to tell the subject/patient to slow down as necessary.
Age Range: 18 to 91 years of age.

The subject's/patient's score is determined by the sum of the subject's/patient's number of errors and number of correct items. If the subject/patient does not finish the task no score is given.

| Rationale/Justification |
The North American Adult Reading Test (NAART) is a quickly administered index that is widely used to estimate verbal intellectual ability of adults between 18 to 91 years of age (Uttl, 2002). It is recommended to use the template and the conversion scores for the NAART as they have been standardized for US and Canadian populations.
NAART is a reliable and valid measure of verbal intelligence, comparable in psychometric properties to the WAIS-R Vocabulary test and with equal psychometric properties in young, middle-aged and older adults. The NAART scores increase across the adult life span (~4.5 points or ~0.5 SD) and with education (~1.5 points/year of education) but they are unrelated to gender.
