Classification
Exploratory: Cerebral Palsy (CP)
Short Description of Instrument

The HUI® measurement system is a generic, preference-scored, comprehensive system for measuring health status, health-related quality of life, and producing utility scores.

Comments/Special Instructions
Originally developed for ages 5 and older. Now includes ages 3–5yrs.
Scoring

The HRQL scoring systems provide utility (preference) scores on a generic scale where dead = 0.00 and perfect health = 1.00. HUI® scores meet or exceed the criteria for calculating quality-adjusted life years (QALY), and the requirements of published guidelines for economic evaluations of pharmaceutical and other health care services. The health status classification and HRQL scoring systems are generic in terms of applying to all people age 5 years and older in both clinical and general populations. A health-status classification system based on HUI®-2 and HUI®-3 suitable for children 3 to 5 years of age is under development.

Rationale/Justification
Used in a large population study in Canada on children with CP. GMFCS correlated with mobility function domain of HUI®-3, correlations less for GMFCS and dexterity used in a large study of youth and young adults with CP. Has been shown to be a reliable tool able to capture the health status about individuals over a one month period. Validity of instrument as a discriminant tool has been shown in children with cancer and in follow-up of extremely low birth babies.
