Current guidelines recommend that all references to strain changes specifically mention an increase or decrease in the absolute value of strain (e.g., increased strain = more negative). Therefore, the notation of strain absolute values should always include a sign, either positive or negative. Positive values are consigned to lengthening, thickening, or clockwise rotation, whereas negative values are consigned to shortening, thinning, or counterclockwise rotation. Greater degrees of deformation = numerically lower strain values; lesser degrees of deformation = numerically higher strain values.
